Internships

While the AJWCEF does not take on interns directly, we are able to negotiate placement with one of our cooperating facilities (David Fleay Wildlife Park, Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, the University of Queensland School of Veterinary Science). Placement availability and length is at the discretion of the relevant facilities.

For those who have completed the advanced training course, it is possible to build up experience as an intern prior to commencing any employment in the area of wildlife protection and rescue. People with qualifications or experience equivalent to the advanced training course are also encouraged to apply.

Under the guidance of a supervisor, interns take part in wildlife protection and rescue activities, and are involved in daily husbandry and diet management. As such, applicants must have a high level of English language skills, as they need to be able to accurately exchange information with local staff without the assistance of an interpreter.

Entry Requirement for David Fleay Wildlife Park and Currumbin Wildlife Hospital:
A minimum overall score of 5.5 for general module in IELTS; and a score of at least 5.5 in speaking and listening respectively.

Entry Requirement for the University of Queensland School of Veterinary Science:
A minimum overall score of 6.0 for academic module in IELTS

If the applicant’s English language skills are not up to the predetermined standard, it is possible to acquire equivalent proficiency at a local English language school beforehand.

Participants will be required to obtain an internship visa or working holiday visa. It is illegal to work as an intern on a tourist visa or any other visa. Therefore, an application must be made to an organization that has received official approval from the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection to sponsor visa applicants.

Before acceptance into the internship program, there will be a selection process. (This may include but is not limited to an interview, essay submission and submission of a current academic transcript, etc.)

Please note that programs and program-related costs will vary depending on the conditions and preferences of applicants. Please contact Head Office directly for more details.
